So, Like, I Can't Stop Saying "Um"

Many people have the bad habit of saying, “Um” when they are speaking. Filler words like “um,” “uh,” “well,” “so,” and “like” are very popular in everyday speech but when you are giving a professional presentation or public speaking it is considered unprofessional. Filler words take away from your speech and it is distracting for your audience because it makes it difficult to get your message across. The beginning of a sentence or in between ideas is usually when filler words are used. Filler words are considered verbal pauses because they occur when you are thinking.

If you are in the public speaking business I encourage you to start working on not using filler words, you will thank me later. The next time you are asked a question, don’t answer immediately, stop and actually think about what you are going to say. The same applies to using filler words in between ideas, just stop and think about what you are going to say.

If you are trying to break a bad habit that has been around for years try asking co-workers, friends, and family members for help. At first it may be challenging but with some practice and a conscious effort to stop using filler words you will be on your way to better and clearer speeches.
