Public Speaking Tip: Give 'Em What They Want
So what do you do? You turn it into a massive positive the for the three that attended. You immediately scrap your big plan and tell the 3 people you will be their personal consultant for the next x hours. Then you answer their questions and make them feel like they are the only persons in the world for the entire time.
As a professional you don't mope around crying because your product sales would suffer or because your ego is suffering. You give it your all whether there are 3 or 3000 in the audience.

Public Speaking Tip: Keystone Effect
Many tripod type screens have the ability to tilt forward at the top which adjusts for the keystone effect. Look for a notched out piece of metal that points toward the audience at the top of the screen where the screen hooks when it is unrolled from its holder.
Note: You are usually stuck when the screen is mounted on the wall or drops down from the ceiling
Trick for ceiling mounted screens -- Tie a heavy weight to the bottom of the screen and pull it back, which has the same effect as tilting the top forward.
Many LCD projectors can adjust for keystone electronically. Make sure you read the onscreen menu, or heaven forbid, "the manual" to learn how to use this function.

Public Speaking Tip: Adapters
Sure most hotels with an A/V department can usually handle your needs, but what about the church, community center or chamber of commerce meeting center? You don't want to be stuck.
This quick tip section can't really tell you all the adapters and cords you need, but here's a short list and bare minimum.
Male Stereo Miniplug is usually what plugs into your laptop.
You might have to convert to:
1/4 inch male mono
Canon male or female
RCA male or female
If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, then you may not be competent to save yourself when no one is around to help. Make a trip down to Radio Shack and take a copy of this article and have them put you together a small array of adapters so you'll be covered when the time comes.

Public Speaking Tip: Get Yourself on Video
AND THEN I SHOW THEM THE VIDEO
I wish I had video of their jaws dropping and their tongues hitting the floor when they see that the video recorded them ... you guessed it . . . jingling coins in their pocket.
One of your best speaking investments is a video camera, tripod and inexpensive wireless microphone. You can see yourself as the audience sees you. Once you become aware of distracting habits you can take the steps to fix them. You can also use the tape to better critique what you said. This is better done when you are off stage and relaxed at your home or office. Video allows you to capture the entire event.
I also add the wireless microphone so that I can put the camera way in the back of the room but still get a good audio track on the video tape. A really good quality, but inexpensive wireless microphone system is the AZDEN WMS Pro which is about $160.00. For the video camera any good high 8, digital 8 or mini dv is plenty good enough and pretty small to carry. Make sure your tripod is sturdy enough so it doesn't tip over easily.

Public Speaking Tip: Sensitive Audience Members
audience members, you must be careful of what you say at the
beginning of your speech.
Some audience members would rather have you sit down so they
could be the star on stage, but others dread the thought of even
being noticed while they are sitting in the audience.
Here is a critical phrase you can adapt and say during the
beginning of your presentation to help the sensitive members of
the audience relax and pay attention to your content.
"We're going to have lots of fun and interaction today, but don't
worry. You won't be put on the spot to do anything you don't want
to do."
That simple phrase will help all of your audience members enjoy
your presentation without anxiety.

Public Speaking Tip: Energy
The greatest asset any speaker can have is ENERGY. Energy comes in many colors and hues, from a whisper to a shout. Some will define energy as passion, enthusiasm or "fire in the belly." With this fire, even a trivial message becomes compelling; without it, the most powerful message will fall unheard. We say "fire your purpose with passion. Run it through your principle-filter. Prepare. Practice. Then, present. The result will be enormous POWER."

Public Speaking Tips: More Hiding Places for Your Notes
1. I sometimes place a chair, back to audience, next to my prop or projection table. I may take off my coat and place it over the chair, but I also use the chair back to tape up notes, or even put them in the seat.
2. I have also placed a flip chart-sized piece of paper in the back of the room so that when I look out over the audience I can look at my outline. If I am on a stage with a curtain, I may have the same sized cheat sheet on both sides of the stage, between stage frame and the curtain, or just behind the curtain. That way, which ever way I am facing or pacing, I have it in front of me.
3. Finally, with adequate preparation, I simply reduce the entire presentation down to 2-3 points and put it on a 3x5 card, which is easily placed almost anywhere within view.
4. The biggest problem I have faced in making notes to myself is writing too small to read it, or putting an excessive number of notes on one page. Mindjet.com has a 30 day trial of its Mindmanager [mindmapping] program which provides excellent graphic organization of notes for a speech.

Public Speaking Tip: A Breath of fresh air
Make sure you have some breath mints with you on stage or in your pocket. I've gone up to congratulate people on a great speech and about fell over because of their bad breath.
You would think all that wind you are blowing on stage would disperse bad breath, but for some reason after speaking for an hour or so, every foul smelling odor from your stomach wants to leap forth to your audience. It may be because you just had lunch with the group and didn't have time to brush your teeth, or it could be just because of the constant rush of air from your belly.
This doesn't matter too much if you are far from them, but if you bring them up on stage with you, or if someone wants to talk to you afterward, it can really reflect poorly on you.
I'm sorry to have to tell you this one, but one bigshot speaker I saw had nose hairs sticking out so far you could braid them. He had the nerve to hit on the women in the audience as they came up to talk to him. I can only imagine what they were thinking about this big jerk.
So, watch the hygiene. You don't want to negate a great speech with poor personal habits.

Public Speaking Tips: Prepare but Avoid Scripts
Some people script out their entire message. Some people are even successful doing it that way. But most speakers lose far more than they gain by preparing exact wording for an entire speech. Craft and shape your opening and closing, but don't fall victim to scripting the whole thing. As a pilot, you plan and execute with precision your takeoff and landing, but once airborne know how to enjoy the ride taking people to the locations they want to see. Once you are soaring on the wings of words, don't be trapped by the words you have deposited on any page. You don't take cue cards to a party. Prepare, but make your presentation a party for all involved.
Speak from you passion and preparation to serve in the moment. Look into their eyes. Come from experience and make sure you and your audience enjoy the ride. Keep an eye on the fuel gage and when the clock says you're nearly out of time, go back to that targeted and prepared close. Don't be a slave to a speech when everyone wants to soar along with you!
