Some type of visual in the room as the participants enter is a good way to signal them that your presentation will be different. It could be an interesting picture or funny quotation on the overhead or PowerPoint screen or a nicely done color flip chart page. You could have helium balloons or colorful airbags lining the walkway into the seating area of your presentation.
Use anything that makes the participants take notice. It will build their anticipation of your presentation.

Public Speaking Tip: Double Check Your Backups
I was assisting a friend of mine in making CD backups of his powerpoint presentation. I was to Fed Ex them to his hotel as a double protection in case his program got stolen or damaged.
A very interesting thing happened. He was emailing me the files to burn on CD for him and many of his photos were not showing up. I kept getting the message on the bad slides, "QuickTime and a Jpeg decompressor needed to view this slide" I already had Quicktime on my computer and never have any trouble looking at jpegs.
He had produced the presentation part on a Mac and Part on a PC and had thoroughly tested the entire presentation on both the Macs and PCs he had in his office. It's still a mystery what actually happened, but to fix it he had to open the photos I was having trouble with in Photoshop and then resave them.
Bottom line. It's a good idea to have a separate backup CD with your presentation on it, and it's a GREAT idea to double check those backups so you never get caught with your pants/skirt down.

Public Speaking Tips: More Hiding Places for Your Notes
More Hiding Places for Your Notes
by Paul O. Radde Ph.D.

by Paul O. Radde Ph.D.
- I sometimes place a chair, back to audience, next to my prop or projection table. I may take off my coat and place it over the chair, but I also use the chair back to tape up notes, or even put them in the seat.
- I have also placed a flip chart-sized piece of paper in the back of the room so that when I look out over the audience I can look at my outline. If I am on a stage with a curtain, I may have the same sized cheat sheet on both sides of the stage, between stage frame and the curtain, or just behind the curtain. That way, which ever way I am facing or pacing, I have it in front of me.
- Finally, with adequate preparation, I simply reduce the entire presentation down to 2-3 points and put it on a 3x5 card, which is easily placed almost anywhere within view.
- The biggest problem I have faced in making notes to myself is writing too small to read it, or putting an excessive number of notes on one page. Mindjet.com has a 30 day trial of its Mindmanager [mindmapping] program which provides excellent graphic organization of notes for a speech.

Public Speaking Tip: Shock 'Em
When I was planning for my recent all day presentation I was considering the post lunch sleepiness that most audiences experience. I wanted to do something totally different that I knew would shock them out of their afternoon low. So I bought a muskrat trap.
I was talking about the "traps" AKA deep trouble you could get into by spam email marketing. I set the trap with great care. Then I put a pencil into the trap to set it off. The pencil snapped showing the trap to be real . . . This got their attention. I then reset the trap and talked about how learning what I was going to teach them in the next section would keep them from getting hurt in the email spam trap.
Then, with lots of suspense building as I approached the trap, I set it off with my bare hand, I let out a fake Karate-like scream, the trap slammed on my hand and I held it up hanging from my fingers. . . . Believe me this got their attention!
DO NOT TRY THIS! DO NOT TRY THIS! DO NOT TRY THIS! I know how to do this without getting hurt. I am not responsible if you break your finger or get hurt in any way !!!
There are many other ways to shock people. You could put a needle through a balloon, you could stick a knife through one of their coats. Stop by any magic or gag shop for tons of ideas. Just don't get too outrageous and scare people unnecessarily.

Public Speaking Tip: Reboot and Know Your Equipment
A typical problem I see with presenters that use Power Point or other computer based presentations is that they forget to reboot before the presentation. Many conscientious presenters practice their presentation just prior to the actual delivery. They use up many of the computer resources before their presentation and when the time comes to deliver the program to the audience their computer crashes.
The other problem I see with computer presentations is that people don't know their equipment well enough or they are using the equipment provided by the meeting planner. You must set your computer so that no screen saver or power savers comes on. You must know how to get your projector out of sleep mode when the introducer goes on forever. Sometimes two computers are attached to the same projector. You must know how to switch between the two when it's your turn to present. Or you may be switching between a VCR and a computer.
The whole point is that you don't want to have your presentation ruined by some simple adjustments that you didn't know about.

Public Speaking Tip: Keystone Effect
When a projector is not exactly on a level plain with a projection screen the projected image is not symmetrical. Most of the time the projector is lower than the screen so the top of the image is wider than the bottom of the image and looks like a "keystone." Keystones are the top stone in an archway that holds the arch together sort of like a wedge.
Many tripod type screens have the ability to tilt forward at the top which adjusts for the keystone effect. Look for a notched out piece of metal that points toward the audience at the top of the screen where the screen hooks when it is unrolled from its holder.
Note: You are usually stuck when the screen is mounted on the wall or drops down from the ceiling.
Trick for ceiling mounted screens -- Tie a heavy weight to the bottom of the screen and pull it back, which has the same effect as tilting the top forward.
Many LCD projectors can adjust for keystone electronically. Make sure you read the onscreen menu, or heaven forbid, "the manual" to learn how to use this function.

Public Speaking Tips: Attention Gaining Devices
Attention spans are short. Here is the "Wake em Up" way to kept the audience with you. After you have created your talk, go through it and make sure that every 2-4 minutes you use some kind of attention gaining device.
You could increase your voice inflection, show a visual, hold up a prop, move around the room, tell a story, throw out a one liner, write on a flip chart, show a picture of your kids if you want to. Just make sure that no more than a few minutes goes by between attention gaining devices. The audience won't know you are using a technique on them, but at the end they will say. Wow! That time sure went by fast!

Public Speaking Tips: Doors and Windows
When deciding how to set up a presentation room when you have full control of the logistics, pay close attention to these two major distracters . . . doors and windows.
DOORS CAN BE A PROBLEM IN SEVERAL WAYS.
A. They may have squeaky hinges -- Solution: ask maintenance to oil them.
B. They may have really loud latches -- Solution: use the masking tape in your accessories bag (you do have one right?) to tape the latch so that you don't hear it engage when the door opens and closes. Also, make a sign and have it with your notes that says, "In session. Please enter quietly" or something like that.
If possible you want to face the doors so that every time someone enters or leaves they are not distractingly in the line of sight of the audience. If you are a humorous presenter, you may deliver pre-planned ad libs to people coming and going because you will see them instantly.
WINDOWS (not the computer kind although we know they can be trouble too :) )
Windows can cause lighting problems when showing visuals and be extremely distracting especially if there is beautiful scenery orother distractions outside. I try to close the curtains if at all possible to knock out both of those problems at once.
If there are no curtains, you may have to really scramble to rethink your visuals which in bright daylight might be impossible to see. In desperation circumstances I've taped up , flip chart paper (it's not that good) wrapping paper, and news paper, but in every one of those case things still weren't that good. One time I hung my overcoat over a window. The more you know about the room in advance, the better you'll do.

Public Speaking Tip: Don't Go to the Bathroom
I just spoke at an association meeting where I had set up all my equipment and got everything working just right. Before the event, I made the big mistake of going to the bathroom while other audio visual people were coming into the room. When I returned, my entire setup was moved. They actually picked my table up with my laptop and moved it about 8 feet closer to the screen which made the picture so small no one would have been able to see it. They insisted on using their projector which was a piece of junk (we ended up using mine anyway) and they generally disrupted my entire pre-program setup work.
So, don't leave a careful setup unattended and always be there early to take care of nightmares like this BEFORE the attendees arrive.

Public Speaking Tip: Laptop Volume
More and more people are playing multimedia clips through their laptops. Here's a quick way to handle the volume when you do not have a sound person in the room. Purchase a tiny headphone volume control (Radio Shack) and plug it into the output of your laptop. Then plug your output wire going to the sound system into the volume control. You can then adjust the volume of your multimedia clip quickly without the need to use the internal volume controls of the laptop which is usually a little bit of a hassle.

Public Speaking Tip: Check Local References
On the international speaking tour I just returned from I could have made a serious flaw had I not checked out material with the locals after I got in the country.
Apparently one country hates a certain kind of animal to the point where some natives actually try to run over the animal when driving on the road. A nearby country loves the same animal.
Although in this case I chose to avoid any comments about this animal issue, I could have ruined a speech by saying the wrong thing about this animal in the wrong country.
This same concept can apply to different areas or the same country or even different parts of the same city. Always check comments you plan on making that are localized with several local people before using them. You might just save yourself a big embarrassing bomb.
Additional Quick Tip:
In the last issue http://www.antion.com/ezine/v5n3.txt I talked about using sound effects as a humor technique. Reader Doug Orwig responded with a great site for finding sounds. It's really oddball name: http://www.findsounds.com
