Public Speaking Tips: Opening
- Make points that folks agree on first. Never create controversy early, unless you are doing it for dramatic effect.
- Never tell a long involved story unless it is HIGHLY TESTED. If it bombs, you will have a tough fight to win back the audience.
- Never tell any story or joke that has a remote chance of offending someone. After you warm up the audience, you may be bolder.
- Somewhere in your opening you must tell the audience why you are there. They need some selfish reason to listen to you.
- Using humor in your opening tells the audience that yours is going to be a fun presentation. It tells them that they might actually enjoy it. Don't disappoint them by telling an opening joke and boring them the rest of the time.

There is nothing I like better than an all female audience. All female audiences tend to laugh more easily and louder than all male audiences. All-male audiences are the toughest because the male ego gets in the way of laughter. They look around to see if anyone else is laughing before they laugh, and they won't laugh as loud because they think they will look less powerful. If you present to an all-male audience it is more critical to bond and be "one of the guys" especially if you are a female presenter. I'm not being sexist here. I don't believe in sexist language. I'm just giving you the thoughts to keep in mind if you are a female presenter and you want to be successful in front of a general all-male audience. You must realize: not all males out there in the business world are as sensitive as me (send all big hugs to me in care of the publisher . . . which is me). If your all-male audience is a general audience not from the same company or field, stick to sports, business, and money to best connect with them. One of the hardest audiences to deal with consists of a group of executives from the same company when the CEO is present. If you say something funny, the executives will start to laugh, but they choke it off until they check to see if the CEO is laughing. If he or she is laughing, then they go ahead and laugh. This kind of audience will create timing nightmares for you. If you are the CEO and you are in the audience for a presentation, it is your obligation to laugh and at least act like you're having a good time to "give permission" to everyone else to laugh. As a Wake em Up presenter, you can sometimes take it upon yourself to gently explain to the CEO how everyone will look to him or her for approval. Audiences that consist of more than 50 percent women are good too because Tom is single. The presence of the females provides a good buffer and makes it OK for the men to laugh, since so many other people are laughing.

One of the easiest things to do to get a good reaction from the audience is to schmooze with them before the presentation. I actually start this by pre-program phone interviews before I even get to the state where I'm speaking. This tip has to do with schmoozing right before you go on stage.
Whenever possible make it a firm point to have your presentation equipment and materials set up and tested long before anyone is expected to arrive at the meeting. When the attendees do begin to arrive, start introducing yourself as the speaker and shaking hands with them. If they are coming in a few at a time, you should be able to spend a few minutes talking to each group. Either make small talk or ask them what they want to get out of being there. Pay particular attention to people that are by themselves and facilitate introducing them around if it's appropriate . . . at any rate, make them feel at home.
These small gestures will create tons of rapport and cause most of the people that you've touched to be rooting for you.

Public Speaking Tip: Last Minute Practice
If you happen to be staying in a hotel in a room next to mine,it is very likely you would hear parts of my upcoming speechbellowing through the walls.
Even after the enormous number of presentations I've done I stillpractice my stories and various bits of material the night beforemy event. I heard Zig Ziglar saying that he does the same thing.
Unless you are speaking every day, it is almost impossible tostay razor sharp with your delivery. Being a keynote / largeevent speaker, I may go 90 - 120 days between times when I tellcertain stories on stage. The last thing I want to do is flub upa line or bumble through a piece of material because I hadn'tthought about it for a couple months.
Don't get cockey! Practice your material several times rightbefore you do your speech and you'll have a much greater chancethat each word will come out perfectly.

Public Speaking Tip: Extremely Small Customization
When speaking to a very small group of people you should be able to include an extremely large amount of customization. You should have researched the group and done your normal homework including phone interviews with the expected attendees (if it is a public event and you don't know who is coming, be set up way early so you can greet and interview people as they arrive.) Jot down a note of why each person attended. Then, when a section of your talk applies to them, point it out and name them by name.
Example: "John, you told me you wanted to learn how to sell more to the people that visit your website. This section specifically addresses that, especially the part about the psychology of the sale."
Don't assume that people will perk up when you come to the part that specifically applies to them. Make a big deal to point it out to them. You will be adding an extreme amount of value which makes them realize that it was a good thing they attended. Oh and don't forget they'll love you for it.

When you are speaking at an event that is NOT in a hotel setting,you must pay particular attention to making sure you haveeverything you need to make a smooth event.
Here's a brief checklist of things that may not be available ifyou aren't in a hotel:

Public Speaking Tip: Use Humor
Use humor in presentations to make yourself more likable. Humor is a great rapport builder which knocks down audience resistance to your message. Make sure you space it throughout your presentation. You will subconsciously or consciously be tagged as trite by the audience members and out of touch if you tell a joke at the beginning and then forget humor for the rest of the presentation.

Public Speaking Tips: Ten You's for Every I

At a recent meeting of the National Speakers Association, platform
personality Joel Weldon demonstrated what "You Power" is all
about. He actually gave the same speech twice. The first was
peppered with "I's" and it received polite applause. Then he
repeated his address, changing the wording to include "you" as
many times as possible. What a dynamic turnaround! Weldon
received a standing ovation.
Make a transcript of your most recent presentation. Now circle
every "I" and every "you." What is the ratio? If it's not ten to
one in favor of "you," rewrite your speech.
